The Risk Manager is responsible for investigating, evaluating, and managing medical professional liability claims involving physicians and other healthcare providers. This position will oversee incidents and/or loss claims involving adverse patient outcomes from initial intake through resolution. The Risk Manager will work directly with outside counsel throughout the US and will also interact with company personnel and customers.

How You'll Contribute

  • Investigate, evaluate, manage and resolve medical professional liability claims against physicians and other healthcare providers with which the company may contract with or employ
  • Interact effectively and extensively with various parties involved in an adverse medical event
  • Investigate the incident/loss claim to obtain data necessary to create an event in a claims database and effectively manage the claim
  • Independently assess anticipated claim expense and indemnity payments to establish appropriate reserves
  • Effectively collaborate with outside counsel on status of cases and strategic recommendations regarding case management
  • Communicate with counsel to direct the management of litigation
  • Provide claims presentations to claims review committee and senior management
  • Participate in mediation of assigned claims
  • Proactively resolve claims within established guidelines and authority levels
  • Review outside counsel bills to ensure appropriate of fees and expenses
  • Identify and assist in developing and implementing risk reduction strategies
  • Contribute to risk management training development and delivery on a company-wide basis
  • Assist VP of Risk Management in responding to inquiries from insurance carriers and outside auditors
  • Assist VP of Risk Management in managing the company-wide loss data
  • Other duties as assigned by management

 

What You'll Bring

  • In-depth knowledge of medical professional liability and healthcare cases, statutes and procedures
  • Proficient in drafting written correspondence to professionals, including attorneys, physicians, customers and insurance carriers
  • Ability to analyze medical claims to find reasonable and workable solutions
  • Experience in mediation, negotiation and resolution of medical professional liability claims
  • Ability to communicate findings and recommendations to internal and external contacts
  • Ability to build positive relationships and partnerships and work collaboratively with people and teams throughout the company and with external parties
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and problem solving skills
  • Strong documentation skills with high attention to detail
  • Professional and tactful negotiation and persuasion skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks/responsibilities
  • Keyboard and data entry capabilities and knowledge of claim data systems

 

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of hands-on claim and litigation management experience including medical professional liability
  • Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in insurance, claims, or healthcare risk management preferred (may include claim, legal and/or nursing certifications)
